Water Play Ideas for Sensory Kids
For sensory kids, summer can be difficult. Not only is it hot and sometimes uncomfortable outside, there are also a lot of big changes with schedules and routines. This can throw things off and trigger sensory processing disorders. Luckily, there are a lot of great ways you can turn summer into a positive experience for your sensory kid, starting with water play. Keep reading to learn about how water play can be benefical for sensory kids, great products to help, and a few great ideas you can do right at home.
Why Water Play is So Beneficial
Water play is so beneficial for many areas of a child’s development. Some of them include:
- Social skills. Water play can greatly improve a child’s social skills and development by encouraging socialization, speech, and positive experiences with others. Water play is a great way to play independently, together, and encourage friendship skills.
- Speech development. If you have a sensory kid who is also in SLP, water play is a great way to practice speech development right at home. Words like “splash”, “pop”, and “wow” are all fun to encourage while engaging in water play.
- Time away from screens. When it is too hot outside to play, it is easy to fall into a screen time trap. While there is nothing wrong with a little screen time here or there, summer is an easy way to get sucked in too deep. Adding water play into your daily routine can help break it up, even if it is super hot outside
Water Sensory Experiences
If your child loves sensory bins, toys, and books, they will love water play activities such as water play sensory experiences.
Some ideas for water sensory experiences are:
Sensory water bin.
If your kiddo loves sensory bins, you know how yucky they can get. Luckily, sensory water bins are the perfect summer solution for clean, easy fun. All you need to do is fill a bin of water, add in some silicone sensory toys, and have fun! You can up the game by adding in soap for fun bubbles or drop in food coloring.
Beach set ups.
Planning on visiting the beach this summer? Pack the sensory toys! The beach can be an overwhelming place, especially for a sensory kid. Our Innobaby Fish Scrub also doubles as a sand scrub to get all the sand off if its become too overstimulating.
Pool “safe space”.
Much like beaches, pools can be an overwhelming place for sensory kids, especially if it is a public one. Set up a “safe space” at the pool with a water bin and sensory toys so that your kiddo can warm up to the environment and have a place to come back to if they’re feeling overstimulated.
